About the Minister's Award for Urban Design

The Minister's Award for Urban Design recognises contemporary Queensland urban design projects of the highest quality. It encourages cities, towns and communities across Queensland to strive for best practice in all projects.

The award highlights:

  • the critical role of good urban design in shaping Queensland
  • how collaborative relationships can lead to the successful development of the built environment.

Nominations for the 2025 Minister’s Award for Urban Design are now open.

The award includes 3 categories, recognising excellence in the fields of urban design, integrated transport and housing innovation:

  • Minister’s Award for Urban Design—recognising design excellence in contemporary Queensland urban design.
  • Malcolm Middleton Award for Housing Innovation—acknowledging residential projects that prioritise accessibility and liveability, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and design excellence throughout all aspects of the development.
  • Movement and Place Award—celebrating projects that successfully integrate transport and movement outcomes while delivering high-quality spaces that maximise social and economic benefits for communities across Queensland.

The awards are open to:

  • urban design professionals who entered the 2024 Australian Urban Design Awards for projects located in Queensland
  • recipients of a State Award in Queensland from the Planning Institute of Australia, Australian Institute of Architects, or the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects
  • projects identified through Queensland industry-based award programs or as identified by the Office of the Queensland Government Architect (considered on a case-by-case basis).

Submissions close 5pm, Friday 2 May 2025. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 15 July 2025.
