Thomas Dixon Centre
The redevelopment of the Thomas Dixon Centre in Brisbane will enable generations to come to create and be inspired through dance and performance.
The Department of Energy and Public Works managed the design, procurement and construction of this multiple award-winning project, in conjunction with Queensland Ballet. The project was completed in July 2022.
Built in 1908 as a shoe and boot manufacturing factory, the State owned Thomas Dixon Centre is a rare surviving example of an early 20th century industrial factory. The building itself is of high historical significance.
Since 1991 the Thomas Dixon Centre has been home to Queensland Ballet.
The redevelopment of the Centre included restoration of brickwork, timber columns, beams and trusses and the WWII air raid shelters. The project also included an extension to the original building.
The redeveloped facility delivers six dance studios including a community studio, a 350+ seat performance theatre, increased dressing rooms and breakout spaces, added facilities for administration staff and wardrobe, and a gym and wellness studio.
WELL Certification
The Thomas Dixon Centre is set to become the world's first arts, heritage-listed building to achieve a Platinum Score of the International WELL Building Standard.
What is WELL?
WELL explores the connection between the buildings, the health and wellbeing impacts on occupants and visitors. It is based on 10 key concepts covering different areas affecting people's overall wellness:
Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind, and Community.
The Standard embraces strict architectural design rules, worksite conditions during construction, regular quality checks, operational standards, and policies. It was founded on the understanding that the facets of our environment interact with personal, genetic, and behavioural factors to shape overall health and wellbeing.
