'Everybody has the right to live somewhere suitable.’
When Wilma’s declining health meant she was having trouble getting around her home, the local Housing Service Centre helped her maintain independence.
Stairs, narrow hallways and carpet were no longer practical for Wilma, who has Parkinson’s disease and increasingly relies on a wheelchair. She is also in remission from advanced breast cancer.
The team at the local Housing Service Centre organised a transfer from Wilma’s Newmarket social housing unit to a fully accessible unit in nearby Alderley.
'It’s a beautiful unit, absolutely gorgeous, where there’s a lift and I can turn around in my wheelchair quite easily. All the handrails I’ve got are fantastic,’’ says Wilma.
'This really turned out to be a godsend. There’s nothing really holding me back. I’m really quite independent.’’
Wilma moved to Queensland with her daughter Jade for a new start after an abusive relationship. She juggled hospitality and cleaning work with family life before her health forced her retirement.
'It was only Jade and I, so I just made sure that I was always there for her after school. I made sure she got a career – she’s now working as a freelance producer in film and television. She loves her job.’
Wilma says she is settling well into her new home, which is close to supermarkets and overlooks a bird-filled park. It’s also close to the medical and rehabilitation services she accesses every week.
'Accessible housing is oh, so very important. If not for this place, I’d still be struggling with the stairs at my old place. There are a lot of people here with various disabilities and I feel like they are very happy here.'
Accessible homes
We’re committed to creating more accessible and sustainable housing options for people with disability.
