Scottish-born Val has lived in Australia for more than 50 years, and a friendly community is important to her. After closing up her launderette in New South Wales, Val moved to Queensland to be closer to family.

Val enjoys having other older women nearby at her social housing complex so they can all look out for each other.

'We all wave and say hello, and can ask for help from each other if we need it.'

Val spends a lot of her time knitting.

'I’ve knitted for charity, neighbours’ kids – my sons and all my nephews have jumpers. I’ve run out of jumpers to knit at the moment, so I’m making squares for a blanket,' Val says.

'Knitting is so relaxing, and I enjoy the challenge of trying new patterns. I knit jumpers, trauma teddies, blankets, beanies – whatever someone needs.'

Val’s story is a testament to the power of community and the comfort found in shared connections. Her knitting not only provides warmth but also weaves a tapestry of friendship and support among those around her.
