Meet Dom. He says he’s never felt as happy as he does now.

But life was completely different for Dom 18 months ago, when he was renting a place that was unsuitable and unsafe for him.

Dom has multiple health conditions including dystonia, a movement disorder, and functional neurological disorder (FND). These conditions impact Dom’s mobility, and he relies heavily on his wheelchair every day.

‘At my old property there was a step, so I had to do a wheelie in my wheelchair to just get in the front door,’ Dom says. ‘The wheelchair could barely fit in the bathroom.’

Dom couldn’t cook on his own because the cooktop was too high and simple tasks like making a cup of coffee were dangerous.

He was supported by his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) advocate to apply for an accessible public housing property that would give him increased independence. That’s when we got in contact with Dom.

‘I was told that I could look at a place,’ Dom says. ‘Well, it was even more than I could dream of. One of the best places I have l ever lived in.’

We’re improving pathways into suitable housing for people with disability, so that people like Dom can have more independence in their homes.

We’re building more social homes so tenants like Dom have a safe and secure place to live. As part of the Homes for Queenslanders plan, we’ve committed to building 53,500 new social homes by 2046.
