It's not just accommodation. It's a program so they have to be involved in maintaining their tenancy. They have to be involved in Social connections. So that's coming down and engaging with staff. They have they have to be looking after their health and well-being. So you know being active and washing and you know doing all those things. They have to be engaged in employment or education so they can be out earning or learning.
Janine is the Mission Australia Program Manager at the new Townsville Youth Foyer, which is providing safe homes for young people aged between 16 and 25 at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
'It’s not just accommodation, it’s a program,’ Janine says. ‘So, they have to be involved in maintaining the tenancy, they have to be involved in social connections. They have to be looking after their health and wellbeing, and they have to be engaged in employment or education so they can be outside learning or earning.'
Featuring 40 self-contained units, the youth foyer includes a communal lounge room and kitchen, a basketball court and private meeting rooms.
This foyer was co-designed with local young people and stakeholders to ensure it meets the needs of its residents and integrates into the local community.
Youth Foyers
Youth Foyers support young people to gain essential, practical life skills to help them transition into independent living. Residents must be in employment, education or training while living in the Youth Foyer. We’re delivering 8 more Youth Foyers for vulnerable young people across the state.
