Navigating new waters

'Tracy spent so much time with us,and made us feel human and seen and understood.'

While Gary recovered from a serious illness, he and his partner Lynda spent 8 years living on the sea, enjoying the ocean air, sea spray, and rolling depths of the Pacific.

Health concerns recently forced the couple to weigh anchor. They were worried about the transition from sea to shore life, but it was made easier by Tracy, a RentConnect officer at the Bayside Housing Service Centre.

'Moving ashore was a massive emotional and mental thing,' Lynda says. 'Tracy really quickly understood how big a deal it was for us, and really took her time to explain things, gave us plenty of ideas and lots of support.

'Her compassion and advice were incredibly helpful, and her humour put Gary, in particular, at ease.'

Lynda and Gary were so grateful for an interest and fee-free Bond Loan Plus to secure their 2-bedroom private rental home on Macleay Island. Tracy also helped the couple register for social housing.

'The best thing about island life so far has been the easy accessibility to the mainland for appointments,' Lynda says. 'Then there’s the closeness to our moored boat, the people we’ve met have been friendly and approachable, and the fun of setting up a home in what feels like a huge house!’’

Lynda says they’re now looking forward to seeing their 6 children, 3 – soon to be 4 – grandchildren and other family more often and without having to consider the weather.

'I’m sleeping better because it’s no longer necessary to keep an ear out for any weather or unwanted movements of the boat. It rained heavily last night and neither of us knew it, for the first time in many years. We have always stood watch during storms, day and night, to ensure our safety. Now, no need. New adventures await!’’
