‘It’s still a bit hard to comprehend we have a place of our own.’
Caitlyn and her partner Henrey spent 18 months living in a motel in Roma with their 2 little girls, Penelope and Portia. They were being supported by Vinnies QLD through funding from our Immediate Housing Response program, and in touch with housing officer Kevin at their local Housing Service Centre.
‘Kevin was really good – he fixed up my paperwork,’ Caitlyn says.
It was Kevin who let Caitlyn know that there was a 2-bedroom modular home available in Roma.
‘I was visiting Mum in Yarraman, 4 hours away, when I got the call and I was so excited. I was screaming at Henrey to find his ID so he could go inspect the home and accept it for us,’ Caitlyn laughs.
‘He didn’t know what was going on. I said, “We might have a home!”’
Caitlyn says she and Henrey each had difficult upbringings in large families and had been couch-surfing since they met several years ago. Now, they’re settling into their new home.
‘The kids can be themselves and have room to play. Penelope loves playing outside in the yard,’ Caitlyn says.
‘It’s close to shops and is walking distance to all the places we need to go, which is good because we don’t have a car.’
Henrey is currently looking for work, and Caitlyn is hoping to study childcare when the girls are older.
Immediate Housing Response
The Immediate Housing Response (PDF, 355.06 KB) Program can help you find short-term emergency accommodation if you’re experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The program will also help you find safe and secure longer-term housing.
As part of our Homes for Queenslanders plan, we’ve recently expanded the package for the Immediate Housing Response to include individuals and couples as well as families.
Modern Methods of Construction
Our Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) program builds more and better-quality homes in less time to support government housing needs in regional and remote areas of Queensland.
