‘It’s been a blessing that they’ve come to my rescue.’
When faced with an unexpected rent increase beyond her means, Donnamarie realised she would have to leave her beloved home at the centre of Rockhampton.
The team at the Rockhampton Housing Service Centre (HSC) helped Donnamarie access a Rental Security Subsidy to help with the remainder of the lease before she moves into longer-term housing.
Under a Rental Security Subsidy, the Queensland Government pays a portion of rent to a landlord for a maximum of 12 months, which helps people sustain a tenancy when they’re experiencing short-term financial barriers.
‘I’ve had a look at the real estate and the units available, I did try, but there’s still nothing I could afford,' Donnamarie says.
Over the past 14 years in her unit, Donnamarie has created her own oasis filled with colourful art, books, and plants.
'It’s very hard for me to leave my home but, as long as I’ve got somewhere to go, I’ll be all right,' she says.
'I’ve always worked off a budget, I’ve always paid my rent and my bills – before I even eat, so I know I’m secure. I’ve always been independent and self-reliant, and I want to stay like that.'
This isn’t the first time Donnamarie turned to her local HSC. She previously received a Bond Loan when she first moved into her unit. Even then, reaching out for help wasn’t easy but RentConnect officer Jhana and the team were there for her at just the right time.
'Jhana has been very supportive, because I was a mess when I went in there,' she says.
'They’ve taken a lot of pressure off me, as far as filling out forms and trying to find a house that’s suitable for me and my disability, and that I can afford, so I can have that security without worrying the landlord is going to keep putting the rent up on me.’
'It’s been overwhelming for me. I just thank the Rockhampton Housing Service Centre for being a strong support for me.’
With the help of the subsidy, Donnamarie can focus on finding a new home that will allow her to maintain the independence and stability she values so much. Although the path ahead may be uncertain, she knows she’s not alone.
